CHI 314 - Chinese Civilization

This course offers an introduction to China, present and past. Topics include issues facing China today, including recent political, social, and economic developments, environmental degradation, etc., as well as historical topics such as the imperial state, traditional family values, and the arts. Students will explore meanings in texts and other sources, relating traditional Chinese philosophy, art, literature, statecraft and social thought to their historical contexts and to current events. The course follows a lecture-discussion format and will make use of sources in its original language. Prerequisite(s): take one 300 level CHI course.
